Whissendine Primary School pupils raise money for the Matt Hampson Foundation

A team of young school governors inspired their classmates to raise an incredible amount of money for a sporting charity.

Whissendine Primary School handed over £2,058 to the Matt Hampson Foundation after hosting a sponsored run at the end of last term.

A representative from the charity, which supports people who have been seriously injured through sport, visited the school to meet the organisers and top fundraisers.

Teacher Hannah Auton said: “The idea of the young governors role is that we are teaching the children about the importance of helping others, and that everyone is capable of making a difference, no matter how big or small. It also provides children with opportunities to develop their leadership and teamwork skills.

“Each year they work together to organise fundraising events for charity and this year the Matt Hampson Foundation was chosen. It was driven by our year six young governor who plays at Oakham Rugby Club, along with so many other children in our school.

“It was a great opportunity to support a charity that truly meant something to our team.”

The sponsored Santa Dash challenged the children to run as many laps of the school field as possible within 20 minutes.

Miss Auton added: “Children from our older classes supported, cheered and clapped from the sidelines to keep everyone motivated. The team spirit was immense.”

The school has previously supported the Harley Staples Cancer Trust, the Dog's Trust and the Children's Eye Cancer Trust.
