Oakham School's Under 16 girls hockey team are bidding to be crowned national champions this week.

The Rutland side are through to the national finals of the England Schools Hockey Championships and will be hoping to lift the Tier One trophy at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.

Oakham School's assistant director of hockey, Alex Cooper, said: "I am extremely proud of the girls’ achievement and they fully deserve to reach the national finals.

"The team's work ethic is second to none and I put the girls’ success down to their hard work and how committed they are as a team."

The Oakham hockey squad are now just two games away from lifting the trophy and claiming their place in the school's history books.

The Under 16 team have so far enjoyed an unbeaten season, with only one draw against Repton School out of the 13 games they have played.

Particular highlights have included their quarter-final win and a hard-fought 3-0 victory away against Surbiton High School in the last 16 of the national competition.

The winners will face either Manchester High School or Wellington in the final while the defeated sides will play each other in a third/fourth place play-off match.
