Convicted Skegness drink-driver asks if he can take car home from court
A convicted drink driver asked magistrates whether he would be allowed to get behind the wheel one last time - to get his car home.
Kevin Dickinson made the request after being handed a 19-month ban from the roads in court on Wednesday (February 26).
“Can I just ask, am I allowed to drive my car home?” the 59-year-old Skegness resident said to Boston Magistrates.
When solicitor Phillipa Chatterton pointed out his disqualification came into effect immediately Dickinson responded: “Oh. I didn’t know.”
Prosecutor Lottie Tyler said officers were called to Drummond Road in Skegness on August 18 last year after the Dickinson drove his Peugeot 3008 into the back of another vehicle.
“The driver of the other vehicle got out and spoke to the defendant and smelled alcohol on his breath and called the police,” she said.
At hospital Dickinson, who receives benefits, gave a reading of 143 milligrams of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80mg.
Defending Dickinson, Miss Chatterton explained her client had suffered from anxiety and depression ‘for a number of years’ and also has long-term-memory issues.
“He does not recall what occurred but accepts the prosecution’s case in its entirety,” she continued.
Dickinson, of Rutland Road, pleaded guilty to drink driving.
He was disqualified for 19 months, which can be reduced by 19 weeks if he completes the drink driver rehabilitation scheme.
He was also fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £48 victim surcharge.
