‘Desperate’ homeless man stole from Skegness store after tent was slashed

A ‘desperate’ homeless man who stole £70-worth of washing tablets after his tent was slashed has been told that theft is never the answer.

James Gilliatt, 34, was ‘desperate for funds’ when he decided to steal from Skegness’ Home Bargains store, a court was told.

Prosecutor Kerry Close said the theft took place at 12.45pm on January 24, where the defendant took five packs of washing tablets valued at £67.45.

“The store manager has made a statement confirming he knows Mr Gilliatt, who was identified on CCTV,” she told Boston Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (May 14).

In mitigation, Daven Naghen said his client was going through ‘desperate times’ when he committed the crime.

“At that point he was living in a tent and somebody slashed the side. He was desperate for funds.

“He was not addicted, but desperate.”

Gilliatt admitted the theft.

“You can’t resolve your issues by stealing,” Judge Daniel Church told him before imposing a 12-month conditional discharge.

Gilliatt, who is still of no fixed abode but currently sofa surfing with friends, was also ordered to pay £67.45 in compensation, £85 costs and a £26 victim surcharge.
