Romantic wedding anniversary trip to Skegness ends with driver colliding with lorry and losing licence
A romantic day out cost a husband £250 - and a three-year driving ban.
Hamza Ikram was taking his wife to watch the sunrise in Skegness to celebrate their wedding anniversary when his BMW collided with a lorry.
After police attended the scene the 28-year-old refused to give a breath sample to officers, an error which has cost him his licence.
Lottie Tyler told Boston Magistrates’ Court the incident occurred on the A52 junction with Nut Lane at Wrangle at 7am on February 24.
Ikram failed a roadside breath test and was taken to hospital for a check up before attending Boston Police Station to give a clearer sample.
“At first he didn’t blow properly, and during that time failed multiple attempts” she said.
“He gave a partial sample reading 55 micrograms (per 100ml of blood - the legal limit is 35mcg).
“But he refused to blow again and make a final attempt.”
In defence, Marc Hudson said his client, who also received a drink-driving ban in 2019, panicked when asked to give areading.
“He got to the police station and started to feel sick,” he said.
“It dawned on his he was in a road traffic collision and started to panic. This caused him not to do as he was told.”
Mr Hudson added. “He was driving in the early hours with his wife, they were driving to Skegness to watch the sunrise.
“It was their one-year anniversary and this was how they chose to celebrate.”
Ikram, of Vale Crescent North, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to failing to provide a specimen for analysis in a hearing on Wednesday March 12.
He was disqualified for driving for 36 months and fined £120.
Ikram, who receives benefits, must also pay £85 costs and a £48 victim surcharge.
