Busy year for Sutton on Sea BeachCare with thong and coconuts among unusual discoveries
An embroidered man's thong and coconuts were among the unusual items collected by a dedicated band of beach litter pickers during another busy year.
Over the past year, Sutton on Sea BeachCare reported having cleared 527 bags of rubbish and debris from the resort's coastline, adding to the 600 already removed in 2023.
Lianne Havell, who founded the group with her son in 2016, noted a significant amount of marine debris following recent storms and bad weather.
In the past week, the team also came across two tyres. "We haven't had that before," said Ms Havell.
She described the summer period, typically the busiest time for the coastal areas along East Lindsey, as "busy as usual," with notable items including fish and chip wrappers, nappies, and even coconuts left behind.
In June, the team collected 32 bags of litter, with 46 picked up in July and more than 30 collected in August.
One item that Lianne found "quite hilarious" was a men’s thong with the owner’s name embroidered on it.
As always, Lianne's message remains the same: "Please come and enjoy the coast and have a lovely time, but please be responsible with your litter."
In July, East Lindsey District Council called on tourists to dispose of their rubbish properly or take it home, following concerns about litter on Skegness beach raised on social media.
However, Lianne previously pointed out that tourists aren't entirely to blame, adding that some even join her for litter picks during the summer.
While a date has yet to be set, Sutton on Sea BeachCare’s next litter pick is expected to take place near the end of January.
