Heartfelt thanks to volunteers who captured loose emu in Spilsby area

A loose emu which has been living in the Lincolnshire countryside has now been captured.

The National Exotics Animal Rescue says ‘Wiggles’ the emu is now being cared for in a sanctuary after she had been spotted in the Spilsby area - but an appeal has gone out to find her owners.

Earlier this week Lincolnshire Police asked people to stop chasing a loose emu in their vehicles.

Thanks to the help of 40 volunteers from a number of organisations, Wiggles was captured today.

In a statement the rescue service said: “After a week of building up her trust, getting her used to the temporary pen and having a couple emu experienced volunteers go daily to check on her wellbeing as well as provide her with appropriate food and fresh water, we were ready for ‘operation emu’ to commence.”

It goes onto state they were able to ‘efficiently’ catch Wiggles today.

But they have appealed to the owners to get in contact to discuss her return.

It goes onto state: “Until such time, Wiggles is now safe and will reside at an emu specific sanctuary where she will be checked over by an exotic vet and looked after until the owner comes forward or she is fit and ready to go up for adoption.

“She’s a little skinny after her adventure but nothing that TLC won’t fix.”

The team has given their ‘heartfelt’ thanks to the volunteers and organisations which helped.

Owners are advised to contact the animal sanctuary via their Facebook page.
