Honest Places YouTube channel delivers verdict on Skegness and Ingoldmells
‘Booming, packed with variety and way better than Blackpool’ is one vlogger’s view of a popular Lincolnshire holiday hotspot.
The Honest Places YouTube channel - which has 51,000 subscribers - recently spent the day in Skegness and Ingoldmells at the peak of the summer season to give its assessment of the area.
The channel has earned its 51,000 subscribers by showing the real side of towns and cities in the UK and beyond, chatting to locals and visiting pubs away from the tourist traps.
“I came here in the winter when everything was shut, it was pretty tragic. But now it’s booming, school holidays, and I want to see what attracts the working class to Skegness,” the host said in video Skegness… The Working Man’s Holiday, which has received more than 60,000 views.
Beginning at Ingoldmells beach, the vlog soon heads to Fantasy Island to check out the market, with a ‘lot of variety’ in the shadow of the rollercoaster and holidaymakers queueing for tattoos.
“They’ll probably regret those in a couple of weeks when they get home,” quipped the presenter, himself no stranger to the ink.
Honest Places - which also headed to Skegness Pier and seafront - has recently posted videos entitled Edinburgh’s Roughest Pub and Dublin’s Dodgiest Pub Crawl, but the east coast impressed.
“The litter, it’s pretty much non-existent,” the viewers are told at Fantasy Island. “The people are on top of it cleaning it up.
“It’s miles better than Blackpool at the minute, it doesn’t have that smell that Blackpool has, it just stinks wherever you go.
“You go two streets behind the main promenade in Blackpool and it’s hanging, the buildings are all decaying. “You get two streets back here and it’s all caravan parks. I’m liking it.”
The first pub visited is Buddie’s Rooftop Bar, while Busters, Churchills and Cheeky Blinders are also among the boozers to feature.
“This place has got everything if you’ve got kids,” viewers are told. “Arcades, fish and chip shops. When the kids are mooching about in the arcades, get yourself in one of these boozers, there’s plenty of them to go about.”
After sinking his beers, the host opts to end the evening trying out a rollercoaster. But his summary of the area will strike a chord with Lincolnshire residents and regular holidaymakers.
“It’s not actually that tacky if you compare it to Blackpool,” he said “I know I keep saying Blackpool, but I think it’s the only thing I can compare it to.
“Blackpool’s tacky, grimy and run down, here it’s not tacky.
“This place seems to have got it right. The beaches are booming, the activities are rammed and Fantasy Island is busier than Blackpool Pleasure Beach, and it’s probably half the price as well.”
