Agreement on new 300-seat cinema for Sleaford ‘not too far away’ says North Kesteven District Council
An agreement on a new cinema for Sleaford is ‘not too far away’, the district’s council leader has said.
The idea for a 300-seat cinema was initially raised five years ago, and had to be abandoned due to rising costs during the pandemic.
However North Kesteven District Council says it remains committed to the plan and is currently holding discussions with a new potential operator for a location in the town centre.
It’s hoped that a preliminary agreement known as heads of terms could be completed soon.
The council agreed to invest £2.2million from its latest budget, taking the amount available for the cinema development up to £5m, ensuring it is ready if an agreement is signed.
The project would be part of a wider regeneration of Sleaford town centre.
Council leader Richard Wright (Con) said: “We remain fully committed to our intention to deliver a new cinema for the area.
“Currently there are complex legal discussions underway with a potential operator to bring forward a fresh proposal that sits within a broader vision of regeneration.
“I am optimistic that we are not too far away now from concluding what are called heads of terms and so it is essential to have the funds committed and put aside for as soon as they are needed.
“The realisation of a cinema remains a key objective within both the Sleaford masterplan and the council’s investment aspirations.
“Given the enthusiasm that is continually expressed for a cinema to be included within our regeneration vision, I am reassured that we continue to be doing the right thing by exploring opportunities to bring one to fruition.”
The council’s ten-year plan, which was agreed last week, also earmarked £177m to provide new homes, including £41m to build new council homes and £136m for properties under the council-owned Lafford Homes
