‘A moment of madness!’ Spalding man will lose job after being caught drink-driving on Christmas Day, court told

Being caught drink driving in the early hours of Christmas Day has cost a man his job.

Stuart Adams - who fixed ‘stricken’ HGVs for a living - was over the legal limit when stopped by police on Spalding's Holbeach Road at 2am on December 25.

In court he produced a letter from his employer which described his decision to get behind the wheel as a 'moment of madness'.

Prosecutor Lottie Tyler told Boston Magistrates' Court the defendant had been spotted by a police vehicle after passing in the opposite direction on Westlode Street.

"The vehicle was swerving over the white line and struggling to break," she said.

"He was pulled over. He said he had not drunk any alcohol that night, but failed a breathalyser."

Adams, of Laburnum Grove, Spalding, gave a reading of 64 micrograms per 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35mcg.

Defending himself, the 48-year-old handed the court a letter from his employers which explained he 'attended to stricken heavy goods vehicles' and labelled his decision to drive a 'moment of madness'.

"Losing his licence leaves him unable to continue his employment," the letter added.

Adams pleaded guilty to drink driving and was disqualified for 18 months, which could be reduced by 18 weeks if he completes a rehabilitation course.

He was also fined £120 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £48 victim surcharge.
