Holbeach Aldi plans passed in spite of Tesco opposition
Plans for a new Aldi supermarket have been passed by councillors tonight - despite a late bid to derail the scheme.
Aldi's application to build a store on the council depot site in Fleet Street, Holbeach was given unanimous approval by members of South Holland District Council's planning committee this evening.
The budget grocer says its site will create up to 40 jobs and provide more choice for shoppers in the town and surrounding area.
The scheme had come in for a last minute challenge from Tesco - which has a supermarket in Boston Road South.
The supermarket giant accused Aldi of 'inadequate' and 'overly simplistic' work in its application and said members should turn the scheme down.
However, councillors were highly critical of Tesco's actions and all voted to approve Aldi's plans.
