Spalding Antiques owner John Mumford dies aged 80

Spalding Antiques owner John Mumford died on Monday at the age of 80.

He traded from Abbey Path for more than 30 years, and had appeared on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow and Antiques Road Trip.

John made headlines in 2017 and 2018 when a man appeared in court accused of possessing a knife with intent to rob him.

John's courage was noted in the comments of Recorder Gareth Evans QC, who referred to him as "a man of some stoicism", who wasn't prepared to let the robber take any of his goods.

John played in Spalding and District Snooker and Billiards League for many years, and the league recorded his passing with "much sadness".

The father of three was heartbroken when his son, Jamie, was killed in a road accident some years ago.

For the last 30 years, John had a devoted companion - Peggy Dales - and, although they never shared a home, they were as close as any friends could be and she was at his bedside when he passed away in Pilgrim Hospital.

John and Peggy stayed with Peggy's daughter, Susan Gould and son-in-law Adrian in Weston-super-Mare over many Christmases.

Susan said John never recovered from losing Jamie and mentioned him every time they met.

She said: "John and Peggy were actually devoted to each other and they never had a day apart in the whole of the 30 years they were together.

"He was a gentleman and I found him to be a very kind person."

Fellow antiques dealer Tony Schofield said John always visited him on his Market Place stall for a natter.

Tony said: "I think he will be missed because he was a popular fellow."

John's funeral service takes place at 10.30am on Thursday, February 27 at St Mary and St Nicolas Church, Spalding, followed by burial in Pinchbeck cemetery, and then there will be a wake - expected to start around 12.30pm at The Wheatsheaf, in Fen Gate, Moulton Chapel.
