Spalding care homes residents look back on their school days

School days are the best days of our lives, or are they? This was the question for residents and staff at Cedar Falls care home in Spalding when they looked back at their formative years in honour of the recent ‘National Teachers Day’.

Most agreed that their school years were happy times, but of course not everyone felt that way and a few people were happier when school was over.

However, it was a wonderful discussion and a great opportunity to compare the classroom of the past with its blackboards, ink and desks to the evolving classroom of later years and the game changing introduction of technology.

But what everybody looked back on most fondly was their favourite lessons and their favourite teachers.

Here’s what some of the home’s residents and staff had to say.

Andrew Burnet said: “Happy days at primary! I was there during WW2 but always safe. We were paraded regularly. We were kindly mothered by the staff. Firm headmaster, Mr Fortune! I learnt to read, a gift for life!”

Sharon Kendall said: “Loved school, favourite teacher Mr Hinch, geography was my favourite subject.”

Marion Whelan said: “I enjoyed going to school. I miss all my friends. School was a happy place.”

Activities coordinator Sharon Boyd: “It was great to look back at our school days and compare them over the generations, it was an enjoyable discussion.

"Although much has changed over the decades we found that what we felt about our school years was not so different. Most of us looked back with some affection, and regardless we all agreed the education we received was invaluable and gave us a foundation for the rest of our lies.”
