Gosberton care home requires improvement

A care home has been told it requires improvement following an inspection.

Risks to people at Bank House Residential Care Home in Gosberton ‘had not been fully identified’, according to a Care Quality Commission report published on February 29.

It was rated good at its previous inspection in June 2018.

“People were not supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff did not support them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service did not support this practice,” the report read.

“Risks to people had not been fully identified and care plans lack information or contained conflicting information on how to keep people safe.

“Medicines were not always well managed, and staff did not understand the difference between crushing a medicine to make it easier for a person to swallow and administering medicines covertly.”

The report added that audits were not always effective in identify concerns and driving improvements and areas were in need of redecoration.

The report also found that nutritional needs were met safely, the home was clean and tidy, there were enough staff to meet people's needs, they received appropriate training and staff knew how to safeguard people.

“However, new staff needed their safeguarding training prioritised in their induction,” the report continued.

The CQC says it will request an action plan from the provider ‘to understand what they will do to improve the standards of quality and safety’.

“We will work alongside the provider and local authority to monitor progress,” the report added.

“We will continue to monitor information we receive about the service, which will help inform when we next inspect.”

Bank House Residential Care Home is a residential care home providing personal care to up to 33 people.

The service provides support to older people and people who were living with dementia.

At the time of inspection in December last year there were 23 people using the service.

Bank House was approached for comment.
