Jerry Green Dog Rescue in Algarkirk launches ‘emotional’ plea for donations after helping heavily pregnant stray
The plight of a heavily pregnant 13-month-old stray has prompted an charity to appeal for help.
Jerry Green Dog Rescue in Algarkirk, helped Heather who had been dropped at a vet clinic after being discovered straying by a member of the public.
It was quickly discovered the young lucher, who was 13-months-old, was heavily pregnant, malnourished and abandoned.
Following a short stay at the vets, Heather was cared for by the team at South Lincolnshire Centre.
Dog Welfare Assistant, Laura Davies said: “When she first arrived, Heather was withdrawn and terrified. It was only through the gentle and consistent care that she slowly began to trust again.”
Laura was able to gain Heather’s trust and stayed with her during the birth.
In one hour Heather gave birth to five healthy pups and later on surprised everyone with four more – however, the unexpected arrival of nine new puppies has placed a significant strain on the charities resources.
Christina Marriott, Chief Executive Officer at Jerry Green Dog Rescue said: “Stories like Heather’s are at the heart of why we exist.
“She arrived scared and unsure of the world, but through love and expert care she’s found safety, and her puppies have had the best possible start in life – but without public support, we simply couldn’t do this.
“That’s why we’re asking people to give generously to help more dogs like Heather find peace, comfort and a future full of hope.”
It costs up to £4,000 to care for just one dog through its full journey and the charity, which operates across Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and East Yorkshire, is now calling dog lovers to help them continue providing expert care to vulnerable dogs like Heather.
The appeal asks for a donation of £50, to bring together a community of supporters whose generosity helps fund one-to-one care from welfare specialists like Laura.
