Spalding-based Families Helping Families boosts Christmas Foodbank Appeal

The first donations have arrived at the Spalding Guardian's office in town from readers who have responded generously to our annual Christmas Foodbank Appeal.

Volunteers at Agapecare Foodbank Spalding, based at The Lighthouse Church in Haverfield Road, will be able to pack food hampers with items bought by readers for families facing a bleak festive season due to redundancy, low income or illness.

Support for the town's foodbank has also been boosted by the efforts of four South Holland women who came together to form Families Helping Families and encourage people from across the area to help the less fortunate this Christmas.

Sarah Winspear, of Spalding, who set up the group with Mandy Baxter, Jane Dhanji and Rebecca Roberts just a month ago, said: "In the October half-term holiday, we saw that kids needed to be fed and so one of the foodbanks gave out sandwiches to them.

"I said to my husband, 'we live in an area where food is all around us, but people are going hungry'.

"After talking to my family over a Sunday lunch, we came up with the idea of Families Helping Families to see of we could get our extended family and friends to each make up a food hamper.

"Through coronavirus, people have learned how much we rely on our families so the idea was to get the families of Spalding involved with helping other families.

"It only started in the second week of November and we've just been overwhelmed by the generosity of all the families and businesses who have helped us."

Families Helping Families were helped by Springfields Horticultural Society after it allowed Sarah and her friends to use its office in Camelgate, Spalding, as a donation centre.

People can drop off items, including such as orange squash, tinned potatoes, tinned vegetables and sponge puddings, at Camelgate this Saturday from 11am until 1pm to be passed on to Agapecare Foodbank.

Sarah said: "Spalding has really come out and fed Spalding and we couldn't have asked for any more."

.
