Swineshead church shut for rest of half-term due to ‘silly’ incident

A church will be closed for the rest of half-term after the historic building was left in a mess.

Sugar had been strewn around Swineshead St Mary the Virgin Church yesterday (Monday, October 21) along with food and orange juice taken from the cafe.

The Rev Mark Williams has described the incident as ‘low level silliness’ but has felt closing the building for the rest of half-term to be the best course of action.

He said: “The person who was locking up the church discovered that the place was in a mess.

“They had stolen crisps and things from the cafe and sugar was all over the place.

“They had made a mess of the kitchen.

“Quite a few people use the church as a place of quiet, not for particularly religious reasons, and it is sad that the village is denied that because of a few people doing silly things.”

This is the second recent incident of an issue in the church as wooden poles holding the church warden staves of office were broken.

Mr Williams added: “People of any age are always welcome in church and it is really good that people come. It is just sad that some people have spoilt it.”
