Fleet Parish Council is taking over ownership of Cherry Lane play area from South Holland District Council

A community orchard and wildflower area is being created within a village park after council bosses have agreed to transfer ownership.

Fleet Parish Council is taking over the ownership of the Cherry Lane Play area from South Holland District Council for the sum of £1.

The small play area, which is tucked away at the end of a cul-de-sac of bungalows, has just a few pieces of equipment which are rusting.

And Coun Paul Barnes, who sits on both councils, has warned the equipment could be removed.

He said: “I am pleased to have worked with SHDC and the parish council to achieve the first stage of transferring ownership. This will enable Fleet Parish Council to have more of say in what the land will be used for.

“We have already planted numerous fruit trees to establish a community orchard and there are intentions to create a wild flower area as well.

“We have for some time been concerned about the safety of the play equipment in this park and this may well be removed if we cannot bring the area up to an acceptable standard

“However, the area is, and will always remain, an open space for all residents to enjoy.”

Coun Henry Bingham, portfolio holder for assets and strategic planning, said: "The transfer of Cherry Lane Playground in Fleet is moving towards completion with Fleet Parish Council after all aspects were adhered to under the Local Government Act 1972 section 1, 2 and 3. We aim for this asset transfer to take place before the end of May.

"We're very keen to see parish councils willing to take on open spaces in their wards where possible, as these important village areas will continue to benefit the communities with parish councils able to tailor there uses better with local knowledge and will be able to provide a much more focused approach to maintenance and improvements."
