South Holland District Council postpones decision on future of our bin collection
Council bosses have ‘postponed’ making a decision on changes to our bin service due to ‘uncertainty’ over local Government reforms.
South Holland District Council held a consultation last year on whether to swap the black and green bag collections for wheelie bins ahead of the compulsory introduction of food caddies in 2026.
A public consultation resulted in a ‘minor victory’ for bags when 51% of the 8,576 responses voted in favour of keeping them.
Officers had been putting together a fully costed report of the different options available to the council - which Environmental services portfolio holder Coun Jack Tyrrell had said would appear before next week’s full council meeting.
However, this report has not been included on the agenda.
The council has now confirmed to this website that the decision is being postponed due to Government plans to reform local government.
A spokesman said: “Due to the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Local Government Reorganisation, we have decided to temporarily postpone the debate and decisions regarding the future of our waste services.
“We believe it is essential to fully understand the impact of these changes before making any informed decisions. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this period of transition.”
Under Government plans, Greater Lincolnshire’s ten councils will be hacked back to just two unitary authorities - along with the mayoral combined authority.
Last week, the county council had submitted an expression of interest to postpone May’s elections - despite days of denials - and hoped its preferred proposal of two unitary authorities would receive favour.
The news of delay and proposal has been criticised by independent councillors across the county - including South Holland.
