South Holland District Council receives 8,561 responses in wheelie bin survey

More than 8,000 people took part in a consultation on whether to replace the area’s black bin bags with wheelie bins.

South Holland District Council has been running formal consultation over the last five weeks to find out if residents want to make the switch to wheelie bins - which has created a hotly contested debate.

With a mandatory weekly food waste collection set to be imposed from central Government in 2026, the council is looking into whether it’s time to make the change and end a situation where South Holland is the only authority in Lincolnshire not to have wheelie bins.

The bin consultation has come as news to many of our readers who have said they were not aware of it until the council’s environmental services portfolio holder Coun Jack Tyrrell had warned people to take part or ‘don’t complain’ afterwards.

Speaking after the survey closed on Sunday, a spokesman said: “We are pleased to report we have had a return of 8,561 surveys. Our external consultation agents will now start to pull together an analysis of the findings.

“We await this feedback prior to presenting the outcome to cabinet in due course.”

Coun Tyrrell had previously stated that he hoped to get ‘more than10,000 responses’ to the survey from the area’s 45,000 houses.
