GCSE results 2024: Cowley Academy pupils all smiles as hard work pays off
Nervous youngsters crowded round the gates at Donington’s Cowley Academy this morning as they prepared to pick up their GCSE results.
But there were plenty of smiles, cheers and tears of joy as the pupils opened their envelopes to discover their grades.
The school is celebrating aafter a significant increase in GCSE grades 7 to 9 compared to 2023.
Students at the school achieving grades 5 or above in GCSE English and GCSE mathematics have also increased by 9%.
Additionally, 26% of students who sat a BTEC qualification achieved distinction* or distinction grades, equivalent to a grade 7 to 9.
In addition to these top grades, there have been notable successes for specific subjects where sport science and health & social care students have performed exceptionally.
Cowley Academy offered extra revision sessions during the Easter and May half term holidays, where students choose additional two-hour lessons on specific subjects.
In term time, during lunchtimes and after-school, subject staff have provided homework and revision clubs as part of their enrichment programmes.
South Lincolnshire Academies Trust Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Lucy Conley said “This set of results demonstrates the incredible hard work of our students and staff, and reflects the students’ hard work and commitment to their studies.
“I would like to wish all of our amazing young people the very best for their future and I hope they will keep in touch.
“I wish all our students the very best in the next phase of their educational endeavours whether this be sixth form, college or an apprenticeship.”
Emily Parnell shared an emotional moment with family and school staff as she read out her results, proving hard work does pay off.
She earned 9s in history, English literature, English language and RE, plus distinctions in media and health and social.
“I can’t believe it, I’m ecstatic,” said Emily, who made the most of the school’s lunchtime revision sessions and will now head to Boston High School to study her A-levels.
Joseph Macpherson is will study his A-levels at Bourne Academy after getting the grades he wanted.
His top marks included a distinction star 2 in social care, and 6s in history, English language and English literature.
“It went fantastic, better than expected. It made all the work worthwhile,” he said.
Matthew Harper was ‘buzzing’ after securing four 9 grades in drama, art, English literature and history.
He will now head to Spalding High School to study those subjects at A-level.
After previously completing a course at the Royal Academy of Arts, Matthew is hoping to return there to study in the future.
Isobelle Rowe will be studying her A-levels at Lincoln College.
Her top marks included a 9 in English language and 8s in English literature and geography.
“It went really, really good,” she said.
Kristyna Doades said she was ‘feeling good’ after securing a distinction star 2 in sport science and an 8 in maths.
She will now study those subjects, plus biology, at A-level in Sleaford.
“I did better than I thought,” said Lacie Holstead with a smile.
She earned a distinction star 2 in health and social, performing arts and sports science, plus 8s in history and maths.
Lacie will join the Spalding High School sixth form next month.
Harvey Draper is now looking forward to a career in the military after securing the grades he needed.
“It went pretty well, I’m very happy,” he said after earning and 8 in history and 8/7 in science, his favourite subjects.
Harvey will join the Royal Army Medical Corps as a combat medical technician.
“It went very well,” said Dolbie Elding.
The teenager will now head to Boston College to begin a electricians course.
Dolbie’s top grade was a 6 in English literature.
Also heading to Boston College to take the electrician’s course is Oli Clarke.
Oli was all smiles after getting a 9/8 in science, his top grades.
“I’m delighted, I got higher than expected,” he said.
