Spalding and Alford area residents to learn more about Ossian offshore windfarm plans at events next week
Residents will be able to learn more about plans which would see power generated from one of the globe’s largest floating windfarms going into two new county substations.
Proposed new substations at Weston Marsh and Alford could be taking energy produced from a 3.6GW wind farm off the Scottish coast, if the proposal is given the green light.
Developer Ossian will be explaining the ‘impact and potential community benefits’ during information sessions in Moulton Seas End Village Hall on Thursday, October 3, and at Aby Village Hall, near Alford, the day before. Both events run from 3pm to 7pm.
The new substations form part of the National Grid’s bid to erect 420 pylons along an 82km stretch between Grimsby and Walpole, near Sutton Bridge. This project is part of The Great Grid upgrade - which has come in for some criticism by locals who fear it will ruin the countryside and our highly productive agricultural land.
Paul Darnbrough, Ossian’s consents team manager said: “Local community engagement and hearing views and opinions early, is very important to the team.
“Our aim is to foster open and honest communication with the communities in which we will be developing and operating.
“These information days will be the first of many opportunities to feed into our project plans.
“Ossian plans to install subsea cables from the wind farm off the coast of Scotland to a landfall on the Lincolnshire coast. From there the power would be transmitted to the National Grid’s electrical system via underground cables to new project converter stations.
“The proposals are at an early stage in their development, and we’re committed to meaningful engagement with local communities and stakeholders to help shape and inform the project.
“We are looking forward to the opportunity to speak with the community, answer questions, and address any concerns they may have.”
The proposed Ossian Project is being developed by SSE Renewables, Japanese conglomerate Marubeni Corporation and Danish fund management company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners.
The developer says the project will be ‘supporting local community projects and working with neighbouring infrastructure developments’.
It is also planning academic engagement and outreach with education and relevant stakeholder to build up a picture of what expertise are available locally.
There will be further stages of public consultation in 2025 ahead of the application for consent to develop the transmission works being submitted in 2026.
Further information on the development of Ossian’s transmission works will be made available via ossiantransmission.com as the project progresses.

Earlier this year developers TotalEnergies, Corio Generation and Gulf Energy Development submitted plans for 100 wind turbines off the Lincolnshire coast with the power transmitted via underground cables from Anderby Marsh to a substation at Surfleet Marsh.
While Outer Dowsing Offshore Wind wants to build a 1.5 GW wind farm, located 33 miles (54km) off the Lincolnshire coast.
