Eat My Words: We review Penningtons Coffee Shop in Spalding
After ‘forcing’ my boyfriend to tag along with me whilst I did some autumnal shopping, there was no better reward than trying out ‘the best kept secret’ coffee shop in town.
I have to admit that as soon as the wind changes and leaves begin to fall, I can’t help but get excited for anything seasonal – I do love me a pumpkin spice candle.
But to break up the slog of shopping – as my boyfriend would probably describe it, (and after a little negotiating), we decided to stop off in Penningtons Coffee Shop on Red Lion Street, Spalding, for some lunch.
As we walked in, we were greeted by a smiley waitress who found us a spot to sit. The coffee shop had different areas for customers to sit in which I really liked because even though it was super busy, it didn’t feel like it at all.
We sat down next to some comfy looking sofas near the conservatory and took in all of the quirky decor. From cosy fairy lights and lampshades, to eccentric animal sculptures and clocks, the shop looks to have it all.
There was a relaxed atmosphere and I enjoyed how chill the vibe was. Fresh flowers were on the table which we presume had come from the Flowers N Things florist next door, and added a nice finishing touch.
As I looked at the menu I couldn't decided between a deluxe hot chocolate or smoothie, but eventually decided on the pash ‘n’ shoot smoothie, which included passionfruit, pineapple and mango.
My boyfriend opted for the big five smoothie, which had pineapple, mango, kiwi and strawberry in it – however, we were a bit confused as to why it was called the big five and only included four fruits.
Both drinks cost £3.95 each.
Food wise, we both chose a toastie. I went for the halloumi, roasted red peppers and sweet chilli jam on sourdough which cost £8.95 and Jacob chose the tuna mayo and cheese option, which was £7.95.
On the menu there was a choice of warm croissants to be served with ham and cheese, cream cheese and salmon and bacon and brie. I would love to see a veggie option as I’d have definitely tried one out.
The smoothies arrived and were fresh and tasty – ours had separated a bit so we made sure to give it a stir before drinking it.
My toastie was amazing. We both agreed that they didn’t skimp on the fillings at all and I basically had a mouthful of halloumi with every bite – which is always a bonus.
The chilli jam made the sandwich sticky and sweet and was a lovely addition.
Jacob went in with high expectations and was satisfied with the tuna toastie.
The lunch was served with a side salad and coleslaw – which was a bit too creamy for my liking but I think that is just personal preference.
At the end of our meal we were both stuffed but couldn’t miss out on a sweet treat from the cake stand. There was a nice selection and it was also refreshing to see some gluten free options.
My stepmum is intolerant to gluten so when I saw the vast options for her, I just had to get a slice of Victoria sponge cake to take home as a surprise.
But of course, my mum would be missing out, so the carrot cake had her name written all over it.
I went for the last Bakewell tart which cost £3.50 to takeaway and Jacob chose a chocolate brownie (gf), which was £2.50 to takeaway.
Some of the other options included, blondie (gf), lemon loaf, flapjack, cheese scones, cheesecake of the day, coffee and walnut cake and many more.
The coffee shop claims to be ‘Spalding’s best kept secret’ and I think it’s defiantly a staple people in the town.
It was busy with young and old customers and from my experience, seems to offer a unique and comfortable setting to meet up with friends and family. There are independent gift boutiques inside to browse around.
I feel like you are always guaranteed to have a nice time and it’s somewhere I would recommend going to in the future.
Out of five:
Food: I thoroughly enjoyed my toastie and would happily go back again for more. ****
Drink: The smoothie was nice but the separation made it look a bit funky. ***
Decor: I really liked the decor. I think the quirky element added a touch of personality and maybe that’s what helps create such a relaxing atmosphere. *****
Staff: The staff were all very friendly. *****
Price: It cost £39.65 all together – including the takeaway cakes. I think it is a bit spenny but for a one off treat it was reasonable. ***
