Deep dip reappears in Holbeach road for a third time!

A deep dip has reappeared in a busy street almost a year after it was repaired for the second time.

Boston Road South in Holbeach was closed for months last year while Anglian Water repaired the sink hole, which appeared in March.

Unfortunately the road has dropped in the same place for the third time but there is debate over who is going to make the repairs.

Anglian Water says no ‘issues or defects’ were found within its assets under the road while Lincolnshire County Council say they will be working with the company to find the cause.

Concerns have been raised about whether the old Holbeach River and silt deposits are creating this continuous problem.

In the meantime, drivers are swerving to avoid the dip or are suffering damage to their vehicles.

Holbeach Parish Council chairman Graham Rudkin, who also sits on South Holland District Council, has heard reports of a vehicle being damaged.

He said: “The county council have got to pull their finger out and get it sorted.

“It does make it dangerous for motorists, especially if you don’t know it is there. I did hear about a lady who went over it and ripped her exhaust off.

“It needs sorting once and for all.”

Coun Nick Worth, who sits on South Holland and Lincolnshire County councils, has raised the issue with highways.

He said: “I am very disappointed that we have not managed to resolve the issue. Clearly it is a far bigger engineering issue than I think highways anticipated.

“I am very disappointed that it is going to cause disruption yet again.”

Boston Road was closed from early March last year after an estimated 4ft hole appeared in the street when the road gave way.

Repairs were hampered by the coronavirus outbreak and the road did not re-open until June.

A similar problem resulted in the road being closed in April 2019.

An Anglian Water spokesperson said: “Following recent investigations by our team in the area, no defects or issues were found with our assets under the road, and the local sewer network is running as normal.

“We will continue to assist Lincolnshire County Council in their investigations when required.”

Karen Cassar, assistant director for highways at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “Anglian Water carried out work under Boston Road last year to repair the underlying cause of the dip, so we will be working with them again to investigate why it is reoccurring.

“In the meantime we have put out warning signs to make drivers aware and will be carrying out temporary remedial works next week.”
