Spalding electrical store to give staff Boxing Day off

Electrical retailer Hughes has announced that its Spalding store will be closed on Boxing Day allowing staff to spend time with their families.

Hughes Electrical, which employs more than 700 staff across at least 30 stores nationwide, is to reward its workforce for their efforts during the coronavirus pandemic by giving them a day off over the festive season.

It means that Hughes' store in Sheep Market, Spalding, will be among those that will be shut on December 26, along with the retailer's delivery depots, trade, rental and head office operations.

However, customers will still be able to buy goods online, either for home delivery or "click & collect", by visiting the Hughes Electrical website.

Robert Hughes, chairman of the retail group, said: "Traditionally, Boxing Day has been one of our busiest days as people head for the shops to pick up post-Christmas bargains.

"However, 2020 has been like no year any of us has experienced and about as far from normal as you can get.

"Therefore, we feel that in this extraordinary year, it is time to put our fantastic staff and their families ahead of normal business needs.

"All of them have been super-flexible since the pandemic first hit, working flat out to supply vital electrical goods to the NHS and vulnerable people during lockdown.

"At the same time, our staff have adhered to strict COVID-secure protocols, or waited patiently while on furlough for our stores to reopen.

"Hughes is a proud family business and next year we celebrate our centenary, so we felt it was only appropriate to make this move as a big thank you to our staff, while we all look forward to a much brighter and better new year.

"All parts of the business will be trading normally between now and December 24, while our ten larger stores will be open for extended hours to make life easier for customers."
