Bingo players in Spalding can call "Full House" in luxury after the reopening of a new-look club in town.

Regent Bingo in Westlode Street celebrated its relaunch on Friday with a ribbon cutting ceremony led by Coronation Street and the Royle Family star Andrew Whyment.

The Salford-based actor, who plays Kirk Sutherland in the UK's longest-running soap opera, was joined by South Holland and the Deepings MP as they jointly reopened the club after a £200,000 facelift.

Originally opened in as the Savoy cinema in June 1937, the building was converted into a bingo club in 1970.

The refurbishment of the iconic building included new carpets, reupholstered seating, a new disabled toilet and redecorating the main canopy outside.

General manager Claire Dixon said: "The opening went very well, Andy Whyment did a great job and everyone went away happy.

"After Andy and Mr Hayes cut the ribbon, we had a bingo night and entertainment from Zebra, with Andy singing along with the band."

Along with the soap star, Mr Hayes and Zebra, Friday's opening also saw guests welcomed by Spalding singer-songwriter Meg McPartlin before Andy called the first game of bingo at the improved Regent.

The reopening signalled the start of a week of events to mark the reopening, including a free gift and drink for club members on Saturday and a "jamboree" on Sunday when bingo players were treated to a hog roast.

Claire said: "We specifically focused on works that would improve the customer’s overall comfort and experience inside the main hall, including better disabled facilities to ensure we meet the needs of all our customers.

"The refurbishment has given the building a new lease of life and we are incredibly grateful to our members for their continued support whilst the works went on."
