Lincolnshire Resilience Forum receives reports of 50 properties flooded with firefighters attended 140 incidents in county as concerns remain for the South Forty Foot

More than 50 properties were reported to be flooded by the barrage of rain brought by Storm Henk which battered Lincolnshire yesterday – and a flood warning remains in place.

Firefighters were called to 140 incidents, which were mainly in the south of the county, during the last 24 hours with many roads flooded and there are still concerns about the rising levels of the South Forty Foot Drain.

Lincolnshire Resilience Forum, which brings together authorities to prepare and respond to major incidents, says it is continuing to monitor the situation.

A statement from the organisation said: “Several properties in Lincolnshire have been flooded because of Storm Henk, and work is ongoing to monitor the situation.

“To date, 54 properties were reported as having been flooded inside and 78 had experienced flooding externally (to gardens, sheds, outbuildings.) This has been mainly in the south of the county, around the Bourne to Sleaford area, with some other sporadic areas of flooding around the county.

“The LRF continues to work into the night monitoring water levels and areas potentially at risk, paying particular attention to Torksey Lock, Shuttleworth House, and the South Forty Foot Drain. Currently, no areas are classified as high risk and the situation has not been declared an emergency.

“Over the next few days, the main risk will be surface water running off from nearby roads and fields. Plans are being put in place to help minimise any potential further impact.”

The county’s firefighters had a busy day yesterday after receiving reports of 140 incidents.

A spokesman said: “Overnight, two crews have attended flooding at a property in Main Street in Wilsford, two crews have attended flooding at a property on Station Road in Little Bytham and two crews have attended flooding at a property on Uffington Road in Stamford. The fire crew at Bourne also pumped flood water away from properties and the fire station on South Street.”

The Environment Agency has issued a flood warning for the isolated properties around the South Forty Foot Drain, which covers from Tongue End, Morton, Aslackby Fen and Little Hale Fen.

A warning issued that the South Forty Foot was expected to rise last night and into today (Wednesday, January 3).

The warning, which was issued last night, states: “Low lying areas near to the river are already flooded, and we now expect properties to be affected from early evening onwards.

“Properties on Milking Nook Drove and Spalding Road in Bourne are expected to be affected first. Please avoid contact with flood water. Our staff are out in the area to check the flood defences, clear blockages, and assist the emergency services and council.”

Alerts are still in place for the Lower Glen and Bourne Eau area, Lower Welland and the wider area of the South Forty Foot.

A total of 37 flood warnings and 31 flood alerts are in place this morning for Lincolnshire.
