Peterborough and District Angling Association offering free sessions for youngsters on the River Welland Spalding
A club will be offering free lessons to encourage the next generation of youngsters to get hooked on fishing.
Peterborough and District Angling Association has the rights to fish in the River Welland, Spalding, and is offering free sessions for kids with their qualified coaches this summer.
The club works closely alongside South Holland District Council, police, Environment Agency and the Wombles of Spalding Common to ensure fishing is safe.
Rob Harris, chair of P&DAA, said: “We are passionate about promoting angling and getting the next generation of kids fishing.
“We see loads of juniors out fishing in Spalding so there’s plenty of appetite but many are poorly equipped to look after fish or simply don’t catch which puts them off.
“Fishing is a gateway to the great outdoors and a healthy alternative to being stuck inside on your phone or tv all day.
“We’ve got qualified, passionate local coaches that want to share their skills with the next generation.
“It’s a great opportunity to learn something new.”
Youngsters will learn about safety near the water, using the right equipment not only to catch fish but also for fish welfare.
They will learn how to catch and look after fish and returning them safely, specifically focusing on lure fishing for pike and perch which are always a popular target on the River Welland.
P&DAA has been highlighting the plight of fish stocks in the River Welland at Spalding for months after the water levels have been kept artificially low by the Environment Agency due to breach in the bank at Crowland.
Mr Harris, had expressed anger that the bank has not been repaired six months after Storm Henk.
Some equipment will be provided for youngsters or they can bring their own to have a go and advice will be on hand.
Three sessions are planned for July 30, August 4 and 11 from 10am - 2pm.
Anyone 16 or under is free to turn up, meeting at Herring Lane car park.
