Taylor Swift, ABBA and ‘Badness’ tributes will take the stage at Spalding Flower Parade as organisers search for next Flower Queen and Deputy
Organisers of a major summer event are ‘excited’ to have added a musical element to the weekend — and are on the hunt for new ambassadors to take part who will represent the town.
Spalding Flower Parade committee members are encouraging applicants for the roles of Flower Queen and Deputy - and confirmed that tribute acts for Taylor Swift, ABBA and Madness will be entertaining at Springfields Events and Conference Centre during the weekend of Friday and Saturday, May 9 and 10.
The historic parade, resurrected by Stephen Timewell two years ago, attracts thousands of visitors and current Flower Queen, Becs Roberts and her Deputy Demi Fontaine will pass their crown to the next lucky winners - to be announced on Saturday, April 26.
Demi said: “I will be sad of course but knowing another amazing person is going to take your place is the best way to approach it.
“The main thing I have learnt over the course of the year is the deputy is equally as important - it was a real team effort.
“We both shared the responsibilities of the role and the main highlight was the parade itself.
Another memorable moment that Demi enjoyed as deputy was a trip to Jersey’s Battle of the Flowers parade last summer.
She said: “The Jersey trip was fantastic.
“Each event I have been to has been unique.
“We’ve visited care homes, schools and the people are always lovely , nice and accommodating.”
Thus year’s Flower Parade theme is musicals and representatives from Jersey will take part - a relationship that is important to former organiser Stephen Timewell who is still heavily involved with the current committee.
Spalding’s new ambassadors will enjoy representing the town at different types of events - nominations and applications are available here
Tribute act Badness will be entertaining the crowd on Friday, May 9 performing some classic ska by bands Madness, Bad Manners and The Specials. There will also be an ABBA tribute performing favourites from the Swedish stars.
Vikki Earle will take to the stage on Saturday, May 10 to perform as Taylor Swift and local bands will perform throughout the weekend.
There will be a funfair, craft, food stalls, bars and shuttle buses to take visitors to and from the town.
David Mustoe, committee member, said: “What we've arranged so far we are so pleased with.
“There will be lots of traders selling different kinds of items.
“We are really excited.”
