Former Spalding detective writes sixth book

A former Lincolnshire Police detective, who now works as a consultant advising crime writers on police procedure, has written his sixth book.

Stuart Gibbon, who worked major crime cases in most of Lincolnshire’s main towns as a DCI and senior investigating officer, has collaborated with crime historian Stephen Wade on the latest title in their series - Catching a Killer – A Reference Guide to Murder Investigation Past and Present.

The book, which has just been published follows the format of some of their previous titles by examining murder from both historical and modern-day perspectives, with reference to criminal law, police procedure, forensic evidence and real-life case studies.

Previous books by the pair covering arrest, burglary and drink and disorder, and Stuart says the latest volume is the perfect companion for crime writers as well as those with an interest in true crime documentaries.

He added: ‘It’s really pleasing how the series has taken off. The last couple of guides we did were slightly smaller, this one is a return to a chunky, reference book.

‘We’ve approached it in the same way as our first collaboration – The Crime Writers’ Casebook. Stephen has covered the historical aspects and I’ve focussed on the modern day, looking at every step of how a murder investigation works.

‘We go right from the beginning with the discovery of a body, who would be called to deal with it, the forensics side of things right through to arrest and the court case.

‘The book also includes some comprehensive case studies including those I have worked and other well-known examples – there’s lots of information for writers and true crime fans.’

In addition to his writing consultancy work Stuart, who retired from policing in 2012, also appears on TV and radio as a policing expert and commentator in true crime documentaries and offers crime and security advice via his website.

Later this year he and Stephen plan to make a number of appearances county-wide to promote their books – now available as a comprehensive reference library - and will be giving a talk at Boston Book Festival.
