Eat My Words: We review The Swan at Moulton

The Swan at Moulton is a pub which I have driven past many times in my travels across our lovely county as sports editor.

It is a pub which I have often considered as somewhere I would like to try and whether the inside matches its quintessentially British exterior.

And, on one sport-free Saturday due to the vagaries of the British weather, I finally ventured through the front door to sample their cracking cuisine.

We were greeted by a warm welcome on arrival at the pub which stands just a street away from the 100-foot tall Moulton Windmill.

Despite being 45 minutes ahead of the booked time, our early appearance was happily accommodated by the genial hosts on a busy lunchtime.

And that time in hand was to prove particularly useful as we scanned the vast menu with a plethora of choices.

Finally opting for a starter, my wife went for the creamy garlic mushrooms which were served with a tasty baguette of crusty bread.

It was a good portion which was well presented and couldn't be faulted - just like the chicken wings that I opted for.

They were cooked in a spicy and tasty sticky chilli sauce and, just so I didn't feel left out, more of the same in the form of the crusty baguette with a delicious and home-made Stilton dip.

It was then onto the main course where my wife went for mixed ploughman’s which was again excellent.

All the ingredients of the ham and cheese were of top quality and a generous portion was served with all of the accompaniments of this great traditional English fayre. It had excellent value to match as well at £10.75.

I opted for the home-made steak and ale served in a large Yorkshire pudding.

The ingredients were again of a top standard and were served with the traditional accompaniments of chips, peas and a side salad which again hit the spot. At £13.95, I felt it represented decent value.

It left no room at the inn for puddings despite plenty of choices on the board as the Swan lived up to its exterior expectations.

It is a charming village pub at the heart of its community that offers a warm welcome to visitors from outside the area while offering good, hearty food at competitive prices which is a must in the current financial climate.

Price: Great value for money. Good-sized portions and well-presented. *****
