‘Heartbreaking!’ Vandals break into Spalding football stadium, damage goals and steal PA system on eve of match




Vandals have broken into and caused damage at at football stadium.

The incident is believed to have taken place at the Sir Halley Stewart Ground in Spalding in the early hours of today (December 31).

Goals and a defibrillator have been damaged while the public address system has been stolen, it has been reported.

Spalding United - who groundshare with Pinchbeck United - are due to host St Ives Town tomorrow (KO 3pm).

Tulips CEO Leigh Porter said : “It’s heartbreaking that anyone would want to do this to a community club run by volunteers, there has been significant damage to playing equipment including the goals and theft including the PA system.

“They have even stooped low enough to damage the defibrillator.

“On the eve of a game, volunteers who do more than enough are just about to start a big clean up so we can get the game on.”

A statement by the Tulips on social media said: “Spalding United are disappointed to announce that during the early hours of this morning a break in has occurred at the Sir Halley.

“Significant damage has been caused within the ground.

“The police have been notified and are on site alongside CCTV footage being reviewed.”

Support has come from fellow South Lincolnshire club Deeping Rangers who wrote on socuial media: “Sorry to hear about this. Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help.”

A Lincolnshire Police statement said: ““Incident 96 was reported to us at 11.25am today and refers to a report of a break-in at the Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field on Kings Road, Spalding.

“Enquiries are still ongoing. If anyone has any information in relation to this, please call 101 quoting incident 96.”

The Sir Halley Stewart Playing Field was given to the town in the 1950s.

It is a charity and the sole trustee is South Holland District Council.

The Charities Commission describes the charity’s asset as: “A playing field for the benefit of the inhabitants of the town of Spalding.”
