Group visit fascinating cemetery chapels
Holbeach Cemetery Chapels trustees welcomed 25 members of the Sutton Bridge U3A group.
They were told something of the history of the Chapels and of the work undertaken in recent years by the Trust. They enjoyed a fascinating cemetery trail, learning about the lives of people buried in the cemetery and their influence on Holbeach, particularly during the Victorian era.
The group also found 'Tommy', the WW1 statue, generously funded by Chosen. The statue will be moved regularly so that, to commemorate the final days of WW1, it will be placed in turn by every grave of a soldier honoured in the cemetery.
The stunning textile panels produced last year, under the guidance of Fiona Guerney, by over 20 adults and 50 schoolchildren, are now on display at Spalding's Ayscoughfee Hall. The panels reflect aspects of the beauty and dignity of the Holbeach cemetery and its Victorian chapels, and will remain at Ayscoughfee until September.
