Holbeach Parish Council organises VE Day celebrations at Carter’s Park
Hundreds of people turned out for an event that marked 80 years since the surrender of Germany in the Second World War.
Holbeach Parish Council organised a celebration in Carter’s Park to mark VE Day on Thursday, May 8.
Visitors enjoyed music from the 1940s and 50s and could light a lamp of peace during the proceedings which started at 5.30pm and went on until 9.30pm.
Jan Hearsey, parish clerk, said: “It went amazingly well, it really did.
“It was so well attended and the atmosphere was brilliant.
“It was very cold so we could have asked for warmer weather.”
A DJ played themed music and there was live entertainment from the Singing Sisters who performed war time songs.
Jan said: “There was fantastic food, flags and a plant a poppy station.
“People lit a lamp of peace and sang I Vow To Thee My Country.”
Jan added: “I think it teaches other generations what can and did happen.
“It is a way to remember.
“It keeps the memory alive.”
The parish council ran a series of social media posts from the Imperial War Museum showing how animals were used in the war and children being evacuated.
