Everybody’s Gym owner Adam Jones celebrates two milestones since opening Spalding venue
A gym owner who was initially declined a bank loan to start his business is celebrating two milestones — and has revealed plans for expansion.
Adam Jones runs Everybody’s Gym in Spalding which he took on in August 2018 and is marking his six years as its owner.
The site has been Everybody’s Gym since 1994 and Mr Jones will be celebrating 30 years with a party and promotional event in September to thank staff and members.
He said: “I used to work here when I was 17 and then went off and did other stuff until I was 29.
I got on well with the owner and helped him out one Christmas and bought the gym from him.
“I was refused a bank loan and found a different way to do it and proved the bank wrong with the assumption that I would fail.”
The site was previously used by Geoff Capes, the renowned former shot putter, strongman and professional Highland Games competitor who ran studio fitness classes.
Mr Jones is pleased that now more than halfway through his ten year plan the gym is ‘all sorted and ticking along nicely’.
The success of the gym has not only relied on hard work and taking a risk but also the community spirit that has been created at the venue.
He said: “It was a risk because I was quite happy with what I was doing but I was having to travel around a lot and the risk was worth it as I could stay at home with my family.
“There have been a lot of sacrifices but I genuinely think it is the fact that it is ‘everybody's gym’ and it is a place where you can achieve goals.
“If I looked in the gym now there are four people that are at least 80 years and younger girls so there are different age differences.”
Having worked as a marketing manager for a company called Creative Fitness Marketing, Mr Jones, who was born in Peterborough and grew up in Spalding has settled in the town with his family enjoying the possibilities that the gym provides to the community.
He said: “I have a little girl called Indie who is two.
“Spalding is a lovely town to live in.
“The gym is what you make it, it is your thing, it is what you make it.”
Plans for expansion include installing an area to provide sports massages and the party will be an opportunity to celebrate the gym’s success.
He said: “It will be a chance to say a big thank you to the staff over the whole 30 years and the people who come here as members, for keeping it such a family run community centred gym.
