Franklin Bros Limited makes planning application to South Holland District Council to erect semi-mobile asphalt mixing plant at Greenworld Park, Sutton Bridge

Fears have been raised over the environmental impact of a proposed asphalt mixing plant.

Franklin Bros Limited has applied to South Holland District Council to create a semi-mobile asphalt mixing plant to be used at the Greenworld Park, Sutton Bridge site.

The development site is located close to the A17, within the existing Nene Transport (Lincs) Ltd depot site.

Resident Craig Jackson, who has campaigned against incinerators in the past, said: "This particular application for a proposed asphalt plant would be damaging to the air quality of local residents.

"I am very concerned that there is no environment assessment with it as it could impact on the wider Wash area which is an area of special scientific interest.

"If the environment assessment is not brought forward we could take it to court to challenge it.”

However, developers suggest that the site will bring employment to the area and note the positives of asphalt production.

Documents submitted with the application states: “We understand that asphalt production is desirable in the area, and that job creation and local supply of product are both in need around South Holland.”

The site, which was previously occupied by Bakkavor until it closed recently, is currently used for by HGVs and the documents state that the proposed industrial use could be classified as ‘less vulnerable.’

A noise assessment has predicted that ‘other residential properties in the area are situated at greater distances from the development site, and therefore the predicted noise impact upon them will be less.’

The planning permission application includes a flood risk assessment showing that flood defences are in place and the site will have a temporary fence and gates erected around it for security reasons.
