Surfleet Primary School rated ‘good’ by Ofsted inspectors

Inspectors rated a village school as good in five areas.

Surfleet Primary School, part of Keystone Academy Trust, had its Ofsted inspection rating quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management and early years provision.

The school is run by head teacher Rick Chipperfield along with chief executive officer, Helen Joyce, and overseen by a board of trustees, chaired by Joseph Pignatiello.

Pupils range in age between four and 11 and the report stated that the ‘school supports pupils to work hard, be kind and achieve’ and that ‘pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) get the support that they need to be involved in all the school has to offer.’

The school was praised for developing an ambitious curriculum that every pupil studies, helping them to build their knowledge in all subjects.

A love of reading was acknowledged by the inspectors pointing out that children start to learn to read as soon as they start in reception year.

Pupils get additional support if they are falling behind and quickly catch up and reading as a whole class introduces pupils to different genres, the report stated.

The report gave advice on ways the school can improve saying that ‘on occasions, teachers present too much information to pupils all at once. This can overload some pupils’ working memory.’

It continued that ‘when this happens, some pupils lose focus and do not learn as well as they should. The school must ensure that teachers present information in a way that does not overload pupils’ working memory.’

It also stated that In a few subjects, teaching ‘does not focus sharply on the knowledge that enables pupils to develop subject-specific skills.’

Inspectors also spoke to pupils, visited lessons and scrutinised plans and books for other subjects including history, geography and science.

Rakesh Patel, lead inspector and His Majesty's Inspector Claire Stylianides visited the school at the beginning of last month.

They met with school leaders responsible for the provision for pupils with SEND, personal development, behaviour and early years foundation stage.
