Spalding bodybuilder hopes to set new record at British championship
A British bodybuilding champion, who started training at the gym aged 12, is hoping to set a new record and gain a second title at his next competition.
Rob Harriss, 43, of Spalding, hopes to inspire the community with his skills and knowledge after travelling around the UK to find out what makes a good gym.
The fitness fanatic, who is general manager at Snap Fitness in Pinchbeck, said: “I decided I wanted to move out of Spalding and work for other gyms around the UK to find out how they run. I have lived in Coventry, Nottingham, Peterborough and Wiltshire and came back to Spalding to be with my partner.
“I had a vision of how I thought a gym should run and after working at different gyms, I had all of that experience behind me and could see what works and what doesn't.
“I joined the gym when I was 12-years-old as back then it wasn’t as strict with ages but I think it gave me a good insight into what it is all about. I was never very sporty but for some reason I really enjoyed it. I think it is because you are responsible for the progress you make and that’s what appealed to me.”
Last year Rob won two bodybuilding titles after four weeks of preparation – and this year he is hoping to set a new record to become the first back to back British champion for the over 40s and under 75 kilo category.
Following his previous win, Rob automatically qualified for the 2024 British finals. He said: “I’m excited because no one has ever repeated two years in a row for the same weight class and done it – the goal for me is to be the first one to set a record.
“It was never my goal to be a British champion, I just wanted to be good at something. Bodybuilding is so disciplined but it teaches you so much about yourself.
“One of the biggest challenges for many people is walking through the door of a gym for the first time, our role at Snap Fitness is to put everyone at ease and welcome them in – and not treat them like a number.
“We’re all on different journeys but aiming for the same destination. I enjoy helping people and taking an interest in why they are here and what made them get into fitness.
“I wish someone was there for me when I first stepped into the gym at 12 to tell me what I needed to work on as I think it makes a big difference.
“I just want people to feel confident and comfortable when they walk through the doors and even though we have a lot of members here, it still feels like a real community – we’re part of their journey.”
