Letters on Spalding's litter, a vital breast cancer drug and the meaning of Easter

Here are the letters from the Spalding Guardian of Thursday, April 21, 2021...

Issues paint the town in a poor light

The Wombles are doing a really good job on the Spalding litter picks, but it must be a thankless task for, as fast as they collect it, there is heaps more.

The entrance to the White Horse car par is just a dumping ground. There is even a mattress and a car tyre left there - plus loose and split bags.

The litter bins are overflowing, partly because they are too small for the kind of litter (bottles, tins, takeaways, cigarette ends etc) blowing about.

The pigeon situation will never get better as people keep feeding them. The signs put up to deter it are so far up the poles they can’t be seen - or people don’t understand.

I walked along the Market Place recently and there are still dozens of them. When I sat down for a minute they came looking for food! The mess gets on shoes, as I always have to clean them when I get home.

A few years ago residents complained about feeding the ducks and swans as there were rats appearing by the river properties. There are so many takeaways and drink shops open now and eating on the streets - it’s really brought the town down in appearance, plus empty shops and badly kept exteriors, wheely bins outside and people smoking outside their shops.

It doesn’t give a good impressions to visitors or residents.

It’s time for Trodelvy

Breast Cancer Now is making an urgent plea to the public to sign our open letter in a final bid to see a life-extending drug guaranteed on the NHS.

Last year we began campaigning around Trodelvy, an exciting new treatment for people living with incurable triple negative secondary breast cancer.

Trodelvy has the potential to provide hundreds of women with this life-limiting disease the hope of precious extra months.

On April 7, we received a devastating blow. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) provisionally rejected Trodelvy for routine use on the NHS in England due to the drug not being ‘cost-effective’ – shattering the hope of patients in England, despite its approval in Scotland.

Please sign our open letter calling on the drug company Gilead, NICE and NHS England to find a solution – including Gilead pricing the drug fairly – so this drug is recommended for use on the NHS.

By adding your name to our letter you could help make all the difference to the hundreds of women in England who desperately need access to this drug and live in the hope of having more time..

Ahead of the public consultation closing on April 29, we are doing all we can to ensure Trodelvy becomes routinely available on the NHS. Please sign at: action.breastcancernow.org/trodelvy-sign-our-open-letter

Thought For The Week: Christ is Risen

I hope you all enjoyed a good Easter and Spring Bank Holiday, however you saw this particular weekend. The weather was lovely and the spring flowers and tree blossom magnificent.

But how do you see this past weekend and its consequences. It is Easter, Jesus is Risen for You and the world, however you understand it. A demarcation between then and now, separated by the Cross and the Empty tomb. Make no mistake the authorities then would have gladly liked to prove Jesus was still dead in the tomb.

Glad to disprove to this small band of followers who said they had seen Jesus alive, the man killed on Good Friday, but they couldn’t . Everyone knew the prominent tomb of councillor Joseph of Aramathea where the stone was rolled away and it could be seen.

The disciples had not drugged the guards and rolled the entrance stone away and then removed the body. The disciples were still shocked, frightened and bewildered from the events of the crucifixion .

If you go to the tomb today in the Jerusalem church of the Holy Sepulchre marked by Helena, there is a presence and sense of awe that something powerful and miraculous has happened. That Jesus the son of God had died for you and me accepting us as we are.

He says follow me and I will give you new hope and new life . Alleluia Christ is Risen, He is Risen in deed Alleluia .
