Coun Gibson said: "It's still sinking in.

It's been a hard battle for quite a few months - we've been working really hard and we've got to work hard as independents because the blue rosette gives you a lot more votes before you start.

"We don't have that so we've got to work hard.

"For me it's for working hard in the community and working hard for my district. "The ballot box in Fulney came out in massive favour for me which I hope means I'm doing a good job for my district - that's what it's about for me.

"I feel happy and lots of other emotions but the work starts now.

"The plan is to do everything we've said, to challenge what we've said we want to challenge, to stick up for this area and be a good voice for SH

"That's now three South Holland independents on the county council so together we can work together, push hard, make sure they don't forget about us.

"Make sure they do out potholes, make sure they look into the lights - whether they should be on or off whichever it is but have a review, stop imposing things like removing the free parking to make way for cycles.

"It's important to have cycle routes but its got to be the right ones.

"So we've said we want to look at those and challenge them and get people to think about them.

"That's the voice we will be for South Holland."

This was the second South Holland seat to be lost by the Tories today.

The full results were:

Gibson Robert (South Holland Independents):1,003

Poll Edward (Conservative): 967

Spoiled: 26
