Donington councillor pleased with recommendation to lower A52 speed limit
Crossing the A52 could soon be safer for villagers after a bid to reduce the speed limit has been successful.
Donington councillor Jane King has been fighting to lower the 60mph speed limit on the A52 so people who live in the Northorpe area can safely cross the road to get to school and shops in the village.
She has now welcomed the decision of Lincolnshire County Council’s planning and regulation committee to recommend that a 40mph speed limit be introduced along that section of road along with the introduction of a pedestrian refuge.
The committee were also presented with a 438-signature petition to support the case to lower the speed limit.
Speaking after the meeting Coun King said: “I have been waiting for a long time for this.
“If we get the refuge it will be a lot safer for pedestrians crossing the road. At least they will be able to get half-way across to stand safely.
“We need this as we have school children using that road.”
A report to the committee states that there have only been two reported injury accidents have occurred on this section of the A52 during the last five years.
But Coun King has highlighted that there have been a number of minor collisions which might not have been reported but is calling on people to now phone in these incidents.
She said: “It doesn’t build up a picture of what is happening if people aren’t reporting everything.
“I would urge people to phone in and report everything. We have always said that if anything kicks off then report, report, report.
“That way the authorities can see if there is a problem and where they need to be.”
Members of the committee have recommended that executive councillor Michael Cheyne that an order be made to reduce the speed limit to 40mph.
