Start date for Sutton Bridge marina extension work

Work is due to start shortly on adding new pontoons to the marina in Sutton Bridge.

Contractors are due to start in June to extend the floating pontoons at Sutton Bridge, which are hoped to attract more boats to boost the village’s economy.

The extension has been funded by £679,000 which was awarded to the Sail The Wash project by the Coastal Communities fund in 2019.

West Norfolk Council is working with Fenland District Council and Lincolnshire County Council on this project, which has attracted criticism from some villagers.

Simon Wright, principal officer for regeneration at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “Work will begin on the installation of new pontoons at Sutton Bridge Marina in early June. Following a successful planning application, five additional pontoons and three piles are being constructed, which will create an additional 58 metre length of pontoon between the two existing pontoons.

“The new pontoons are of a higher specification than the existing leisure moorings and will allow a greater range of vessels to use them. This is great news as it means not only can they be used by a wider variety of vessels, but also we hope that larger and older vessels will choose to visit the marina and become an attraction for visitors in their own right.

“The work is being funded by the Sail the Wash programme – delivered by a partnership including Fenland District Council, Lincolnshire County Council and West Norfolk Council. The delivery team, were all involved in the first phase which means they have a good existing knowledge of the site. The partnership is also making efforts to raise the profile of the marina with a number of initiatives including a refresh of the Sail the Wash website.”

The Sail the Wash programme and the extension work is funded by the Ministry of Housing Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) via a Coastal Communities Funding Grant.

The Sail the Wash programme is designed to enhance existing and create more opportunities for leisure craft wanting to visit The Wash area and surrounding waterways.

The project includes:

l practical improvements to the mooring and navigational infrastructure

l the development of marketing and promotional materials to establish a Sail the Wash brand

l It will attract additional tourism to the area which will support the local tourist economy and promote local business.
