Fenland Aero Club’s organisers launched ‘mercy mission’ for extra supplies at ‘spooktacular’ pumpkin fly-in

Organisers of a Halloween themed fly-in at an airfield had to go on a mercy mission to get extra food for the ‘spooktacular’ event.

Fenland Aero Club held a pumpkin fly-in day featuring 37 aircraft at the Holbeach St Johns airfield.

The event included 120 ‘movements’ of aircraft along with 100 visitors who enjoyed tucking into sausages and pasties - which had sold out by 12.30pm.

Heidi Barrett, events manager, said: “We had to go on a mercy mission to get more food.

“It went spectacularly well.

“Thankfully the weather was on our side.”

Several weeks of preparation went into the day and the club hopes to host a themed event each month.

Mrs Barrett said: “It is quite a big team effort and we are a small but keen team of committee members.

“It was a wonderful turn out.

“People turned out from all over the county”

Next month the plan is to host an evening with Long Sutton Men’s Shed and arrange other fly-ins during the winter months.

Mrs Barrett said: “The committee wants to thank everyone for attending and looks forward to welcoming them to their next event.

“Next year we are going to have our large Wings and Wheels event during August Bank Holiday.

“That is our big event.”

The club hopes that events will attract new members and visitors can join up by becoming a social member.

Mrs Barrett said: “Fly ins were very popular in the 80s and 90s and we would like to bring them back to Fenland for all to enjoy.

“We welcome all locals to become social members which will allow them to come down and watch aircraft and enjoy the facilities.”

The club welcomes visiting pilots and offers flying lessons and experiences.
