New cemetery on Blue Gowt Lane Pinchbeck, set to provide more space for the area
A long-awaited project to create a new cemetery is due to be completed soon.
The new development on Blue Gowt Lane in Pinchbeck, will become a permanent resting place for villagers at the end of May.
After concerns were raised over limited space at the current burial ground in Cherry Holt Lane, parish councillors started looking for alternative sites in 2018.
The planning application was approved by South Holland District Council in 2021 to turn the site into a cemetery.
Parish council chairman and district councillor James Avery said: “We started looking for an alternative site seven years ago after we realised we were running out of space in Cherry Holt Lane cemetery.
“The site at Blue Gowt Lane was secured a year ago however, there were a couple of delays due to bad weather in the winter and we had to wait for approval for road closures from county highways.
“It meant we weren’t able to start the work until summer last year.”
A new housing development which is currently being built near the Spalding Western Relief Road project, prompted concerns over an increased demand for more burial space in the future.
Coun Avery added: “My only concern is Spalding is expanding quite significantly in terms of housing – especially adjacent to our new cemetery.
“Once those houses are built in some years from now, there could be an additional demand but we will cross that bridge when we get to it.
“The cemetery at Cherry Holt Lane has been used for the best part of 100 years and we are hoping our new one should last 50 years.
“Legally we don’t have to provide burial space as a parish council, but we think residents would prefer the choice.”
The new cemetery is set to include up to 700 burial plots, a dedicated cremation area, amenity building and a remembrance garden.
Work at the new development is being carried out by landscaping company Gunns & Roses, which is based in Bourne.
