New signs, willow sculpture and biosphere will be coming to Spalding soon as part of £230k National Lottery project
Long promised signs, sculptures and ‘riverbank biospheres’ will be appearing in the coming months as part of a £230,000 project.
Spalding Reconnected received National Lottery Heritage Fund cash two years ago with the aim of promoting the town’s heritage and history.
So far this project has resulted in a heritage strategy along with some activities, there has been little physical change that has taken place but new sculptures and ‘wayfinding installations’ will soon be in place.
There is also the promise that having strategies will help to bring in more cash to the area.
South Holland District Council, Heritage Lincolnshire, Transported Art, East Mercia Rivers Trust and Lincolnshire County Council have all been involved in the project.
A council spokesman said: “The Spalding Reconnected project has always had two clear aims, to deliver immediate physical benefits to the town that celebrate its heritage and historic riverside, and to develop a heritage strategy and foster relationships that will help position Spalding to secure further, larger pieces of investment in the future.
“In terms of the physical enhancements, the new wayfinding installations will be put up in town over the coming months, one of the main ambitions for the project, alongside beautiful willow sculptures along the river and new ‘riverbank biospheres’ and coir roll habitats being introduced to help support the river’s ongoing health and ecology.
“These, alongside the creation of the heritage strategy and work with residents and local families through engagement and community arts workshops, are helping to build the foundations to continue to support and improve the town’s offer for many years to come.”
Transported Arts and Lincolnshire Willow, which is based in Snitterby Carr, have been creating a willow trail along the river bank as part of this project with a grand unveiling planned on Saturday, November 23.
Spalding and South Holland residents are being given the opportunity to get involved with this project.
