No start date on Springfields expansion – as bid is lodged to tweak plans

Bosses cannot yet say when work will start to build a shopping centre expansion – as plans go in to tweak the details of their proposals.

Springfields Outlet Shopping and Leisure was granted planning permission three years ago to add a further 18 new outlets which could create more than 350 jobs.

However, the owners have issued a public notice to say they are looking to change the wording of the conditions of the planning permission.

Retail director Simon Stone said: “Springfields Outlet Shopping and Leisure have submitted an application to South Holland District Council to vary the wording of a number of the planning conditions attached to the original planning permission granted for the development of the centre back in 2021.

“The proposed amendments to the planning conditions would allow for a change in phasing of the permitted development to ensure the investment is secured and the benefits it would bring to the town would not be lost to the town and surrounding area.

“The start date for the project is not yet fixed due to the current economic climate.”

Members of South Holland District Council’s planning committee had approved the plans to add the extension close to the Travelodge hotel, with the creation of a new pedestrian access.

Owners of the Camel Gate shopping centre were said to be looking to create 15 new retail units along with three food outlets – and hoped to attract major new names to the area.

The planning permission also includes requirement to spend £200,000 on town centre improvements, appointment of a Springfields Media Co-ordinator and interactive information screens.
