Call to make most of The Wash in South Holland

More should be made of the natural beauty of the area around The Wash, according to a leading councillor.

There are plans to nominate The Wash as one of the first ‘National Marine Parks’ in a bid to celebrate the country’s coastal wonders.

Coun Nick Worth said he did not know if the new title was needed - given that The Wash is already a Site of Special Scientific Interest and holds several national and international designations - but does think it’s time we celebrated the area more.

He said: “I am not sure it needs anything more - but if it helps to promote it then I wouldn’t be against it.

“It’s the most undersold part of Lincolnshire. It’s fantastic - I think it’s something we really should be tapping into.

“I would recommend to anybody feeling a bit stressed to go out there for a couple of hours. It’s fabulous. You can sit out there in the peace and quiet and be the only person enjoying the wildlife.”

The area attracts a large number of wildfowl and waders - and is already popular with dog walkers and nature lovers.

Coun Worth thinks more should be done to promote the footpath around The Wash for walkers and family picnics and feels expert-led wildlife tours could be popular - all while keeping the area unspoiled.

He added: “There’s lots of interest out there - filming companies have been out there on a number of occasions. We talk about our big skies but there’s massive potential for that area.”

The Blue Marine Foundation wants ten National Marine Parks to be set up with the same status as National Parks on land.

Its report said: “The North Sea is very much a ‘working sea’ where meaningful engagement is needed with the seascape and marine environment. The challenge to engage people here is perhaps tougher than anywhere due to the lack of open, sandy beaches in Suffolk and the vastness of the mudflats of The Wash.”

Blue Marine Foundation executive director Charles Clover said: “Our natural heritage is right there, just off the beach, but paradoxically the public is hardly involved in the enjoyment or the stewardship of this island nation’s greatest asset.”
