Fleet woman says she feels ‘proud and overwhelmed’ after raising more than £1,000 in memory of her late grandma
A ‘proud and overwhelmed’ granddaughter says she was left ‘gobsmacked’ after raising more than £1,000 in memory of her grandma.
Crystal Rudd of Fleet, held a Christmas light display event at her house in honour of her grandmother, Thelma Gowland, who died last year after battling with bowel cancer.
The fundraiser raised £1413.31 for Bowl Cancer UK and saw more than 100 people support the cause on the night.
Crystal said: “It was incredible. I couldn’t believe how many people turned up – there were headlights from cars which just kept coming down the road.
“I’m just really proud and overwhelmed with the response it got and I wished my nan was here to see it all.”
Prior to the fundraiser taking place, Crystal received a positive response from members of the community and big brands such as B&M and Home Bargains – who donated four trolleys worth of Christmas lights and decorations and an £100 gift voucher.
Crystal added: “People kept asking if we were planning to do it again next year but unfortunately we don’t have anywhere to store everything.
“Two days after the event we sold all of the decorations which raised £800.
“It was one of those final moments to say goodbye to my nan and considering it was such a small event it was incredible.”
