Youngsters extol the virtues of Rotary Club of South Holland programmes

Five young people are benefitting from activities supported by the Rotary Club of South Holland.

Youth Service is one of Rotary International’s objectives and a meeting of the Rotary Club of South Holland earlier this month the group hosted five young visitors who are taking part in various programmes organised by Rotary.

Charlotte Southwell will be taking part in the Short-Term Exchange Programme. She will be hosted by a Rotarian family in Taiwan. Her Taiwanese exchange partner Jin will return to the UK with her for a period of reciprocal hosting by Charlotte’s family. Charlotte and Jin have already formed a happy relationship via Skype.

Three candidates are attending Youth Camps this year. Tim Clayton, who is a student at the Deepings School, will be going on a ten-day mountain bike tour in the Slovakian mountains in July.

Brooke Lindsay, a former student of Spalding High School, has already attended her Youth Camp in Israel where she had a wonderful time visiting the must-see places there, such as The Negev Desert and Eliat on the Red Sea.

She floated in the Dead Sea, stayed on a Kibbutz and spent time in Jerusalem making many international friends. They are already planning a re-union at the Munich Beer Festival this October. She is now on an apprenticeship at the Priory School, Spalding, organised through Boston College.

Katy-May Hart is set to go to Sicily on a cultural touring camp in July. Youth Camps do not involve any reciprocal hosting. They offer the opportunity to form friendships and to interact with other like-minded young people of different nationalities in pursuit of a common interest.

Georgia Healey is a student at Spalding High School for Girls. She has been selected to attend a Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) which means she will be spending a week on a residential course at the Cambridgeshire County Council residential outdoor activity centre at Graffham Water. RYLA is a personal development and team building course involving tough physical and mental challenges.

Basically, Rotary Youth Exchange and Youth Camp activities involve only the cost of travel to and from the foreign country and the candidate’s personal spending money.
