Spalding High School schoolgirl organises concert at Crowland Abbey in memory of grandfather
A schoolgirl has arranged a concert in aid of a charity that is close to her heart following the death of a family member from cancer.
Hannah Sporton, a Year 11 student at Spalding High School, is organising the fundraiser at Crowland Abbey later this month - a year after her grandfather Neil Hopkinson died - in aid of Pancreatic Cancer UK.
The diagnosis came as a complete shock to the family as the 69-year-old showed no symptoms.
Pancreatic Cancer UK’s statistics show that 80 per cent of diagnoses are made too late - and are urging anyone with early signs such as indigestion, back or stomach pain, changes to their poo, weight loss and jaundice to visit their GP for tests and potential treatment.
Joanne Holland, Hannah’s mum, said: “It was a bit of a shock as he didn’t have any symptoms.
“He used to go dog walking for miles and miles and played tennis which just goes to show it can happen to anyone even if you are physically fit.
“Earlier screening would have been helpful - it was sudden and once he was diagnosed it was quite quick.”
The Pancreatic Cancer UK website explains that early detection can save lives - even if the symptoms seem vague which makes it difficult for GPs to distinguish it from less serious conditions.
It highlights that the disease can be hard to diagnose - as symptoms vary from person to person - and Hannah’s aim is to bring awareness and raise funds for the charity.
Hannah’s love of performing inspired her to organise the choral concert which will take place on Saturday, November 23 at 7pm and her music teacher Richard Garbett will accompany the choir on the piano.
Joanne said: “Hannah has been involved in drama and singing since Year 3 and is a member of Act II theatre company.
“She enjoys it and apart from helping to book the abbey I have left her to organise it - we have a close community and I hope that people will be supportive.”
“Her grandad would be so chuffed and it makes me feel really proud.”
Donations to the charity can be made on the door and proceeds from buying refreshments will go towards the fundraising.
